Sophisticated and tough on the outside, thoughtfully comfortable within, with plenty of power under the hood and an imposing range of safety and convenience features, the ford f-250 is the industry pacesetter for trucks, and for good reason. The f-250 is a three-quarter ton version, full-size pickup truck. It comes in three trims: xl, xlt, and lariat. Optional wheelbases go from 137-inches to 172. 4-inches. Three engine options are available: 300 hp 5. 4-liter triton v-8; 362 hp 6. 8-liter v-10; and 325 hp power stroke 6. 0-liter turbo-diesel v-8. They are all controlled by a standard six-speed manual transmission, and a five-speed automatic is optional. For 2006, the ford f-250 sees minimal changes.

New v6 and 5-speed automatic improve streetability. introductionthe 2012 jeep wrangler is a game-changer because of its new powertrain that moves jeep out of the dark ages. It's the pentastar v6, new last year to chrysler, named one of ward's 10 best engines for 2011. The new engine makes considerably more power with slightly better fuel mileage, an epa-estimated 17 city/21 highway mpg. It's smaller, lighter, and more advanced than the engine it replaces. a smooth new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2012 replaces last year's inadequate 4-speed. The transmission is well behaved and doesn't hunt for gears. It was designed for use with chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi engine, so it maintains jeep-like industrial strength. The pentastar block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop wrangler. The wrangler unlimited corners well. The wrangler unlimited is built on a wheelbase that's 21 inches longer than that of the regular wrangler. the soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The available removable hardtop comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. It's a challenge to tune the radio by touch-screen in a bouncing jeep. even with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the wrangler has to work hard on two-lanes. But a lack of neck-snapping acceleration must be compared to what it had before. And if it weren't an aerodynamic brick, it wouldn't be a jeep. There are seven boxed crossmembers in the chassis adding strength but weight. The rubicon with 5-speed automatic weighs an anvil-like 4130 pounds. riding a rubicon in oregon's tillamook forest, we tackled a trail that looked impossible for a vehicle off the showroom floor. Later, another wrangler rubicon scarcely broke a sweat on rocky trails crossing peaks in washington's cascades. Running it hard, it averaged 18 mpg for us. All wranglers come standard with 4x4 and 6-speed manual transmission, with 5-speed automatic available. the freedom top, a three-piece modular hard top, is available for all models. It may be the most recognizable vehicle in the world. Round headlamps, 7-slot grille, wheel flares, removable doors, bolt-on fenders, fold-down windshield. The hardtop is $735 option; it comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. We spent a summer day on jeep trails in the northwest in a wrangler rubicon with all three parts removed, and it was fabulous. The body-colored hardtop is new to the rubicon in 2012. The soft top remains the sportiest in appearance. Standard colors are available for those who want to blend into the environment, whether suburban or bucolic. interiorthe jeep wrangler interior was revised and dressed up for 2011. It didn't make any errors on the routes we programmed, although finding the button to enter destination was maddening. It's a jeep-like choice. we went trail climbing in oregon's tillamook forest with a wrangler rubicon. This is a very nice car. It was owned by a nice woman whose roof we repaced several years ago on nantucket island and i asked her to let me know if she would ever like to sell it. Three years and two children later she did. It was used occasionally in the nice weather and i purchased it last october. I then took it to a freind of mine who races and restores and maintains ferraris. As a favor he restored it mechanically and painted it along with some exterior parts. It has less than 40,000 miles on it. the speedometer has been broken for awhile (at 36,000) but we live on an island that is only fifteen miles long and i take it for a spin once or twice a week. The restoration papers are in the photos collection. The car runs like new. My main car is a 2014 911s convertible and i know i won't use this as it should be driven.

All-new crossover utility vehicle on the cutting edge. introductionthe 2007 ford edge is an all-new crossover sport utility that answers the call for a roomy vehicle with utility and style. Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car. the edge handles better than the truck-based explorer while offering almost as much cargo space. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, it's easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Also, getting in and out of both the front and back seats is easier. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design. the edge is not small. It competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and other midsize crossover utility vehicles, all of which are larger than they appear. we found the edge delivered on its promise to be a dual-purpose vehicle. It's roomy and comfortable, and it has fully foldable seats for cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a new v6 engine mated to a new six-speed transmission. the edge has a modern look we find appealing and its bold chrome grille adds to its presence. We're certain most will view the edge as an edgy suv more than a car. The reason is immediately apparent, it has a very wide track and a longish wheelbase. More important, this is not just about looks. A long wheelbase and wide track make for a more stable vehicle because the mass of the vehicle is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs. the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan. despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing. to top it all off, the optional vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorutility used to mean just the ability to carry stuff. Comfort and style were secondary, even mutually exclusive. The edge manages to provide plenty of utility and a stylish, comfortable interior. Starting at the back, the tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. And even when the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room. pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to give a total of nearly 70 cubic feet of storage on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional sky vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier due to the rear wheels being placed well back allowing for less intrusion from the wheel well. front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, again largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. There are two decent cupholders alongside the substantial looking transmission shifter. The edge is based off the same platform as the ford fusion and the mazda6, regarded as one of the best handling midsize sedans. So the edge starts life with a good base. Ford says it purposely designed the edge to deliver a slightly softer ride. Those who have driven both vehicles concur with this assessment. ford's all-new 3. 5-liter v6 engine has variable valve timing and is much smoother and more refined than its previous v6s. The new engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission developed with general motors. We found the engine produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. We would rate the performance as middle of the pack: it's neither a barnburner nor a slug. we found the rack-and-pinion steering provided good feedback with precise control. The edge we drove had all-wheel drive and the optional 18-inch wheels helped make the car more sure-footed. We did not get a chance to drive a base model but suspect it will still be more than acceptable despite having slightly less grip. the all-wheel-drive system is simple, with a viscous coupling in the middle of the driveshaft that constantly alters the power to the front or rear depending on the need at any given time. the edge is not designed for off-road use yet it has a decent ground clearance of eight inches and ford even specifies its approach angle (16 inches), departure angle (24. 5 inches), and ramp break over angle (17 degrees), specifications usually reserved for off-road vehicles. We think it'll be fine for unpaved roads. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability control is standard on all models. Brakes are smooth and responsive. The big 5. 4-liter v8 is smooth and quiet, and delivers quick acceleration. It's rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque and 15/19 mpg city/highway. The 4. 6-liter v8 and 4. 2-liter v6 engines perform well, also. the f-150 comes in six distinct variants to meet the different needs of a wide range of owners. Within those variants are three cab choices, three bed lengths, three bed styles, and a choice of powertrains. Ford claims more than 60 possible variations. The f-150 is known for its toughness, strength, and cargo capacity, while offering interior design and comfort. Its amenities show attention to detail. the base xl is surprisingly nice inside. The fx4's optional captain's chairs are comfortable. The lariat is classy and nicely equipped, with every known amenity. The king ranch has a western feel that's very inviting. The supercrew features a back seat that's roomy and comfortable for adults. Since then, the model lineup has expanded with new trim levels, variations, and specialty models. The 2007 models feature more than a dozen subtle improvements inside and out. Among them: seat comfort has been enhanced for 2007. A tire-pressure monitoring system now comes standard. Lariat and xlt models get new grilles for 2007. A 5. 4-liter e85 flexible fuel v8 is available, and power for the 4. 6-liter v8 is increased for 2007. A new dvd navigation system and sirius satellite radio are available, and an auxiliary audio input jack is now standard on most models. It includes a dark accent billet-style grille insert with body color grille surround, unique 18-inch aluminum wheels, available 20-inch aluminum wheels, a chrome exhaust tip, fog lamps, unique captain's chairs with center console and floor-mounted shifter, and a body color front bumper, rear bumper, door and tailgate handles. the lariat is the luxury model, di. walkaroundin the late 1990s, f-150 went aerodynamically curvy, and although it remained number one in sales, not everyone liked the look. So for 2004, ford returned the f-150 to its square-shouldered roots, with a more utilitarian look that continues essentially unchanged for 2007. it's a functional look, but in its own way it's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram. In fact, the f-150 has a unique image, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. It's at once crisp, bold, and sturdy. in short, we think the f-150 is a great-looking truck. the f-150 shares styling cues with ford's handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp downward drop in the forward part of the door windows, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. the nose is square in concept, with a large, bold, big-rig grille opening. Yet the front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through to the tailgate. F-150 is both upscale and utilitarian, a look that's very appealing. the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, arizona beige on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch wear bar-style grilles. practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is more than 22 inches deep, for a generous margin when hauling larger cargoes. The basic xl is surprisingly nice. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which has a western feel that's very inviting. We love the king ranch, but it's not for everyone. in recent years we've found the f-150's front bench seats flat and unsupportive. The seats have been improved for 2007 models, however, and ford says they provide more support and comfort. The front bench is still split three ways: the center section flips down to reveal a console with storage and cup holders. The big difference in the back seats between supercrew and supercab models is rear legroom: 39. 0 inches for supercrew, 32. 7 inches for supercab. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte. but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom. focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.' we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written. there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here. interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis. myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving. the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension. Options include leather seats, power moonroof, voice-activated navigation, parking technology, and special interior trim. safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe all-new focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The new hatchback is especially aerodynamic looking. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous focus. Active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the new chevrolet cruze are doing it, as well. ford calls the distinctive grille split trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet. sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like. the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs. the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are. but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow. the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. Benefiting from an available all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design. the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano and toyota highlander. All of these vehicles are larger than they look, a result of their slippery styling. we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for carrying larger cargo. Rear park assist is available and can help alert the driver to objects or people behind the vehicle when backing up. walkaroundthe ford edge is bigger than it looks in photos. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. The edge is almost eight inches shorter in overall length than the ford explorer yet its wheelbase is just over two inches shorter. Also, the track on the edge is over three inches wider while the overall width is about two inches wider. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. Visually, this aggressive stance makes the edge stand apart from the relatively tippy look of traditional suvs. the edge features ford's bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan. despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like tailgates found on many suvs. the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a panel, of about one foot, between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility. front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls. the ford sync communications and entertainment system can be controlled via voice commands or dashboard buttons. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus cause less intrusion from the wheel wells. cargo carrying is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for improved rear-seat comfort. driving impressionunderway, the ford edge handles reasonably well, given its considerable size and weight. Having its wheels out near the corners aids stability and handling. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. We found the engine produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. We would rate the performance as middle of the pack: it's neither a barnburner nor a slug.

New engines, more models. introductionsmooth and quiet, the ford f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain at construction sites, around farms and over utility roads, and on the open highway. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. For 2011, the f-150 received a new engine lineup and electric-assist steering on all but 6. 2-powered crew cabs. For 2012, the lariat limited model is no longer offered, but one of the nine f-150 versions should be close enough. a new fx appearance package is for 2012 f-150 fx2 and fx4 models that includes 20-inch wheels and lots of flat-black trim inside and out. All 2012 f-150 4wd models can now be flat-towed behind another vehicle, like a motorhome or larger construction truck. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required, and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,550-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. Other choices include a 360-hp 5-liter v8, the only engine offered on every cab/bed combination, a 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8 on supercrew short beds, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 on all but regular cab short beds. So it has to stay competitive: the standard v6 is more powerful than any other pickup v6 and the same horsepower as chevy's 1. 1-liter-larger v8; the 6. 2 offered in crew cabs and raptor is more powerful than any half-ton pickup engine; it's the only pickup that comes with a 6-speed automatic in every model. Supercab trucks add higher fx and lariat trim to choices plus svt's raptor, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet). A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short bed or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives while harley-davidson is supercrew short bed only. the f-150 xl 22,990) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. This is typically about $1,700 and required to get the maximum payload rating about 1,000 pounds heavier than standard f-150. It includes stouter parts underneath and 7-lug 17x7. 5 inch wheels. f-150 xlt 27,690) adds chrome for bumpers and trim, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlamps, carpeting, cruise control, power windows and locks, and better cloth upholstery. All manner of options are available on the xlt, including three wheel diameters, tailgate step, cargo management and towing equipment. f-150 fx4 37,480) and fx2 33,900) come with a 5-liter v8, black grille and body-colored bumpers, trim and mirrors. A long overdue redesign, worth the wait. introductionthe 1984 jeep cherokee arguably invented the small suv, and it ruled for 17 years until its slot was taken by the 2001 jeep liberty. Now it's back in the lineup. Cherokee looks cool again. Called the tigershark multiair 2 i-4, it makes 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque, with fuel mileage epa-rated at 21/28 mpg city/highway. We got 23. 4 on the highway and winding mountain two-lanes. the optional engine is a 3. 2-liter pentastar v6, making its debut in the cherokee. It's derived from the 3. 6-liter that's been one of ward's 10 best engines for the last three years. It makes 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque and it's epa-rated at 19/27 mpg city/highway. We got 18. 1 mpg in a 4x4 model. The advantage to the v6 is towing, rated to 4500 pounds (best in class says jeep) versus 2000 pounds for the i4. However it's a tough call, because the v6 is only a couple mpg thirstier. both engines are aided by a new 9-speed automatic transmission, standard in all cherokees. It's a compact marvel, raising the regular-car bar for tranny construction and packaging, not to mention the electronic and mechanical complexities of high-speed meshing of spinning steel gears. First gear is an aggressive 4. 71:1 for low-end performance, while 6, 7, 8 and 9 are all overdrives for the highway, to increase fuel mileage and lower noise and vibration. Ninth gear is a super overdrive, at 0. 48:1. the off-road oriented trailhawk will do amazing climbing and descending things, while looking too good to be able to do those things. Floods, blizzards, earthquakes, typhoons and the outback are no worries mate. It breaks new ground with electronic descent control. With its tall 4. 7:1 ratio for first gear, the crawl ratio of 56:1 is nearly as high as the wrangler's. there are three new 4wd systems introduced in the cherokee: active drive i, with a one-speed power transfer unit; active drive ii with two-speed ptu and low range (it's towable); and active drive lock with two-speed ptu, low range and locking rear differential. The basic active drive i is all-wheel drive, distributing some but not a lot of drive to the rear wheels when needed. the selec-terrain traction control system has five modes: auto, snow, sport, sand/mud, and rock. There's a new independent suspension to go with increased torsional rigidity in the frame. There are significant standard extras, like led headlamps and daytime running lights, fold-flat front passenger seat with storage, and more. as for looks, it sure doesn't get lost in the suv crowd. Its designers delivered style and distinction while enhancing the iconic image. Other suvs dream of looking like the new cherokee. The cherokee latitude is less blingy than the cherokee limited. Trailhawk looks best because it's tough, with raised suspension, overfenders and painted tow hooks. It says jeep the loudest. the interior is stylish and utilitarian, both. Everything has a function, while being easy to reach and operate. There are clear digital gauges between the speedometer and tach, lit organic white. Navigation on the touch screen is easy to read, with basic buttons. We wish the radio had a dial. the latitude standard cloth seats are rugged and sporty, and fit just right. The 40. 3 inches of rear legroom is nearly 2 inches more than big brother grand cherokee, due mostly to seat height. The 60/40 rear seats fold flat in a heartbeat. behind the wheel, it feels tight. Smooth and solid with a firm ride. The v6 has a bit of engine noise, with kick-butt acceleration. The ride is softer except for undulations, while speed bumps are gentler. The v6 just feels bigger. at the introduction of the new cherokee, we were given the opportunity for comparison spins in a honda crv, toyota rav4, and ford escape. The cherokee turned them into vanilla. Trailhawk equipment levels are similar to those of limited, though trailhawk comes with seats trimmed in cloth, leather and vinyl. safety equipment standard on all models includes 10 airbags, electronic stability control and abs. Optional safety features included parksense parallel/perpendicular park assist, adaptive cruise control-plus, forward collision warning-plus, lanesense lane departure warning-plus; 9-1-1 assist call; esc; electronic roll mitigation; blind-spot monitoring; rear cross path detection; parkview rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines. walkaroundthe all-new cherokee doesn't get lost in the suv crowd. It delivers style and distinction while clearly being a jeep. Maybe best expressed by the grille, the seven jeep slugs backed by eggcrate, one vertical piece with the aluminum hood, a unique design described by jeep as waterfall. The hood has a hump as on a muscle car, made into a flat-black wedge on the trailhawk. The slugs are bright chrome in every model but the trailhawk, where the eggcrate is black, changing the car's presence. All around, the trailhawk with its rugged touches (wheels, tires, fender flares, tow hooks) looks more jeepish. other suvs dream of looking like the new cherokee. Sweet little slits that look like headlamps are actually led daytime running lights with turn signals, while the projector headlamps rise in black fascia over the front bumper, like bugeyes. They're so small they look more like foglights, while the foglights themselves are even smaller, down at the bottom corners of the fascia, again eggcrate black on the trailhawk. the latitude is less blingy than the limited, and therefore better looking. there are trapezoidal wheel arches, with sculpted sides leading back to where the cherokee tries hard but struggles. There's a big fat horizontal concave in the liftgate, reducing the inherent slab but obscuring the jeep identity. The 4x4 models have more black fascia in the rear, which tweaks some style out of the slab. Big led horizontal taillamps extend into the glass with a top-heavy touch that's apparently aerodynamic. interiortight, comfortable, everything a function, easy to reach, stylish.
